Descendants of Sheriffs & Constables
of Colonial & Antebellum America
Insignia
The Society’s emblem and insignia were designed by Founders Lynn Long and Gayle Coan, with the assistance of the founding council. The emblem is described as a modern, round, gold-colored police shield containing in its center a set of three skeleton keys on a key ring within a six-point star, all of which are positioned on a black background. “Sheriffs & Constables of Colonial & Antebellum America” encircles the center. The outer surround of the shield is a series of four center-pointed, ribbed, scalloped skirts. The emblem and insignia are crested by a displayed eagle perched on the center point of the top skirt, facing toward the observer's left.
The emblem hangs from a red, white and black ribbon. The black color symbolizes the jail bars that in later years held the accused while waiting for their hearing or serving their term. It also is for the Bible on which many law-enforcement officers took their Oath of Office. The white color symbolizes the loyalty to the oath these men took to uphold the laws of Colonial and Antebellum America. The red color symbolizes the courage of those appointed or deputized to uphold the laws to protect the innocent.
You may request either a gold arch or a bar for your ancestor's name on the large insignia. Either of these may be worn at the top of the ribbon. Be sure to indicate which one you prefer. If you have supplemental ancestors, you may want your ancestor's name from your initial application on the arch and your supplemental ancestors' names on bars below it.
Stars representing an ancestor may be worn on the large insignia ribbon, miniature insignia ribbon, or on an officer's neck ribbon. The star replaces the ancestor arch or bar.
A Recognition Pin, which is the same size as the Miniature Insignia, can be worn on a lapel.
Officer Bars and Committee Rider Bars are available for both the National Officer and National Chairman pins.
